The film:::

In the early 1970s, producer Jim Newman, assisted by director John Coney, suggested that the African-American musician make a live documentary about his unique, hallucinatory work.

From concert footage, the project was transformed into a work of fiction whose narrative blends DIY science fiction, blaxploitation archetypes, Egyptian mythology and political intrigue.

Released in 1974, Space Is The Place is an undefined cinematic object whose artistic and political aims follow those of its main character.

Performance:::

«It’s an unfinished film that could be improved and remade ad infinitum.»

These words from Herman Poole Blount, aka Sun Ra, were recorded by Jim Newman some forty years after the film’s release.

And so we responded to this invitation to visually and musically re-read this generous, DIY work.

In addition to images from the original film, this cine-mix also features The Farthest, a documentary about the Voyager spacecraft odyssey, providing a compelling fictional continuation.
